When buying enzymes, be sure to check for high enzyme activity – FIP-E/mg and USP-E/mg units.
1mg of papain does not equal 1mg of papain. This sounds a bit confusing at first glance. However, when you look at it more closely, it becomes clear that not only the enzyme quantity (mg) but also the activity of an enzyme is crucial for its action.

What does that mean?

The natural enzymes papain and bromelain are obtained from raw substances; papain is extracted from the papaya and bromelain is extracted from the pineapple fruit. This is achieved by a gentle and complex process of extracting enzymes from the fruits. The purer the enzymes are extracted from the fruits, the higher the respective enzyme activity per mg. In order to be able to compare the enzyme activity and purity of the individual enzymes, special measuring units have been developed. Thus, the enzyme activity of papain is expressed in USP-E/mg and of bromelain in FIP-E/mg.
